About team/Mō te tīma

The Centre for Adverse Reactions Monitoring (CARM) operates New Zealand’s voluntary adverse reactions reporting programme for medicines and vaccines as well as adverse events to natural health products and medicinal cannabis. 

CARM's activities which are funded under contract to the Ministry of Health, operate alongside other research initiatives and programmes to make up the New Zealand Pharmacovigilance Centre (NZPhvC), supporting an integral part of New Zealand's pharmacovigilance activities. 

CARM works closely with Medsafe, the Ministry of Health, the health sector and academia.

The role/Te mahi

This opportunity could suit a practicing clinician seeking career diversity.

As a Medical Assessor, you will be able to apply your clinical knowledge of medicine and pharmacology/vaccinology to reviewing clinical reports of adverse events to determine the likelihood of any causal association. This forms part of the report record in our national database and underpins pharmacovigilance. 

Your contribution to these pharmacovigilance activities through individual report review or database analysis, will support identifying events, or patterns of events of concern that may inform regulatory action, prescribing advice or education. 

Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

You will be a clinician with current, or very recent clinical practice experience registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand in General Practice or another relevant medical specialty. 

Candidates will also have:
•    A passion for exploring drug safety issues and contributing to the safe use of medicines. 
•    Demonstrated knowledge of pharmacology and epidemiology or pharmacoepidemiology.
•    Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
•    The ability to author reports.

This is a fixed term (to 30 June 2028), part time position, located in Dunedin. Hours up to 1FTE are available and will be negotiated with the successful candidate. 

The successful candidate will be appointed at an appropriate step on the Lecturer/Research Fellow - Medical & Dental ($92,028 to $112,514) or Senior Lecturer/Senior Research Fellow - Medical & Dental ($138,548 to $172,693), pro rata, depending on qualifications, skills and experience.
